Puppy Tips

A new puppy is just like a baby. It can't  be expected to go long periods without food and water, potty breaks and human companionship. A new puppy ages 2-6 months needs food every 8 hours. A more mature puppy can go a little bit longer. Food should not be left out all day; It makes house training difficult.

Dogs enjoy the companionship and human heirarchy that is developed with a regular feeding routine. Just like a toddler, a puppy will get into mischief if left unattended. If you are not in the same area or don't have a secured yard (climate appropriate of course) please crate or kennel your puppy. This is not cruel. It provides them a secure safe environment. A dog is instinctively a den animal and likes to be secure and sleeping in a crate helps to foster that instinct. A crate is also helpful in house training a dog. Dogs love to chew. Consult your veterinarian on what she considers a safe chew toy for your dogs during all the stages of your puppy's life.

A puppy needs a high quality nutrient dense food. Large dogs mature slower and will need this for a longer period of time. Your vet will give you guidelines on what he recommends for your specific breed. It is important not to overfeed your puppy. Just as in humans, excess body fat increases the chances for diseases and joint disorders. Do your pet a favor, and maintain their weight at a healthy level.
